What Mississippi Medicaid Covers
Mississippi Medicaid, sometimes called MississippiCAN, covers medically necessary applied behavior analysis (ABA) for enrollees under 21. This coverage comes through the federal Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment (EPSDT) benefit, which requires states to cover any medically necessary service that corrects or improves a condition.
In practice, that means ABA is covered if a doctor or qualified professional says it is medically necessary. You do not need to pay out of pocket for ABA if your child is on Medicaid and under 21.
Who Qualifies for ABA Coverage
To get ABA covered, your child must be under 21 and enrolled in Mississippi Medicaid. You will also need a formal autism diagnosis, usually from a doctor or a licensed psychologist, and a treatment plan from a qualified ABA provider.
The treatment plan must show that ABA is medically necessary. That means it should explain your child's specific needs, the goals for therapy, and why ABA is the right approach. Your Medicaid plan reviews this plan before approving coverage.
How to Get Prior Authorization
Before ABA sessions start, your provider must get prior authorization from your Medicaid managed care plan. You do not file this yourself. The ABA agency you choose will submit the treatment plan and other paperwork to your plan for approval.
Your Medicaid plan's name is on your member card. If you are not sure which plan you have, call the number on the card and ask. The plan will tell you exactly what forms they need and how long the review takes.
Ask your plan these questions: What is the prior authorization process for ABA? What documents do you require? How many days does the review take? Are there any session limits or caps? If they say there is a limit, ask them to point to the specific policy.
What to Do When an Agency's Panel Is Closed
Some ABA agencies are not accepting new Medicaid patients because their panel is full. This is common, but it is not a dead end. Ask the agency when their panel reopens and ask them to put you on a waitlist.
While you wait, call your Medicaid plan and ask for a list of other ABA providers in your area. Also ask if the plan has a care coordinator who can help you find an open provider. Keep calling every few weeks, because panels open and close.
If you cannot find a provider, ask your child's doctor or your Medicaid plan about other early intervention services that might help in the meantime.
What About Employer Plans
If your child is on your employer's health plan instead of Medicaid, the rules are different. Mississippi has a state autism insurance mandate, but it only applies to fully insured plans. Self-funded employer plans are exempt under ERISA, though many still cover ABA voluntarily.
If your child is on an employer plan, call the customer service number on your insurance card and ask: Is our plan fully insured or self-funded? Does our plan cover ABA for autism? If yes, what are the session limits and prior authorization rules?
Do not assume your employer plan covers ABA just because Mississippi has a mandate. Check your specific plan.
Finding ABA Providers in Mississippi
